if you cancel sky tv....
you keep your box, but can you still record the free view channels that you receive onto the hard drive?

Mate spoke with sky and they said you can't, but i thought as long as you received the signal for that station, you would be able to record onto the hard drive.

Interested as thinking of knocking my TV subscription with them on the head... bloody rip off merchants.

Simple answer is no...

Re: if you cancel sky tv....
Yes, but you still have to pay them to do so (tenner a month I think).

If you cancel, login to your Mysky account the day after it cancels and you will have an offer on screen saying you can come back for 50% off

Joe, thanks for the tip, I was thinking of going to Plusnet when mine's up, as they can use your Sky box

I cancelled sky a year ago. basically get a lot of channels but cannot use the live pause or rewind or record. Cannot even watch the programmes that I have already recorded.

Re: if you cancel sky tv....
Definitely can't! I know someone who cancelled cos they were moving, kept the box and dish so you can obviously use it to watch the freeview stuff but you can't access stuff left on the planner or record new stuff! You need an active for that to happen.

Mind you Sky jump through hoops and offer all sorts of discounts to get you back on board once you've cancelled!

Rupert Murdoch is a wonderful human being and I like being ripped off by him.

Ripped off!

You're paying for PREMIUM television!
If Sky is so shit, how come every fucker wants it?

Premier League football, Ryder Cup golf, US Open tennis, Champions League - and that's just a small selection of the sport on offer over the next month aside from everything else.

Makes me laugh when people are happy to spunk £80 on a night out getting smashed on shots but cry when they're asked to pay the same for a month's worth of family television covering everything.

Re: if you cancel sky tv....
Side/Duke - you can, you have to pay them a tenner a month for the card that enables Sky+ for the free to air stuff.

You won't be able to play back shows that were from encrypted channels when you did subscribe though

Joe, how does Plusnet work on your Sky box?

your opinion fella, and you are entitled to it. From my perspective, it goes up every year and I don't really get any added benefit.

The majority of what I watch is on freeview chanells. It's only the sports news I watch regularly, and my kids watch Disney channels when they come round.

I don't subscribe to sports because it is just too expensive. If I am desperate, I will stream a match on the net, but I feel that they are over spending on their football contract and making non sports subscriber payers also help foot the bill.

Don't know, my ISP is BT.

I assume it's for the On Demand stuff - originally you could only get that if your ISP was Sky, but they opened it up a couple of years ago.

The only other thing the boxes use the internet for is to validate multiroom subscriptions for any sub taken out since December last year (so no need to have boxes attached to the phone line anymore - doesn't apply to multiroom subscriptions from before then yet though)

I canceled Sky, my lad got Sky multiroom and gave me one of his permissions. Therefore, I get it on my iPad for free.
Thank you Son.

Re: if you cancel sky tv....
Yep, do the same for my old man, my sister and my mate - 2 can watch at the same time, never had any issues with them needing it at the same time

Re: if you cancel sky tv....
Cancelled a month ago and signal went couple of weeks ago. £63 a month was a lot considering most of what I watched was BBC or ITV anyway. Haven't missed it as yet bar probably the Game of the Day option on Sky Sports and yep losing the Sky Plus and record / playback feature is taking some getting used to because I had a lot of stuff on there, but on the upside I am getting through all the DVD's I have bought over the years that are still in their wrappers!!

Probably the biggest annoyance is that I only get the main BBC and ITV channels still on HD. Assume Sky held the cards with HD on say ITV 2, 3 and 4 along with Channel 5 HD although what do you watch on Channel 5 anyway!!

RE Sky Sports - Is it true that you can buy a day ticket for a tenner or something like that? So that for the likes of a football match or the Ryder Cup you can just have Sky Sports for 24 hours or something along those lines? Have to be honest if you could only have Sky Sports I'd probably do that but it's an add on to the main package so it's still quite expensive.

And as yet I haven't had any offers to come back!!!

They are all at it though it's not just Sky. BT have released price hikes for December. Paid 159.84 recently for yearly line rental and that's jumping to 169.90 in December.

Re: if you cancel sky tv....
Been reading if you call their bluff and cancel, they can offer a half price deal, for some it seems.
If they don't come back with an offer, do you have to wait for a certain period before you can subscribe again?

I got offered 20% tops when I cancelled so politely declined. By all accounts it's 15 months or so before a cancelled subscriber can go back as a "new" customer. Might be wrong though.
